Unlike every year, this year IBPS has made some major changes in IBPS PO syllabus & exam pattern. IBPS is all set to follow the exam pattern and syllabus of SBI PO from this year onwards. IBPS has decided to incorporate total 155 questions under 3 hours of duration. You can go through the highlights of the changed/new Exam Pattern and Syllabus of IBPS PO Prelims & Mains Exam 2017 in this post.

The detailed syllabus of IBPS PO Exam 2017 shared below will help you understand the weightage and marks distribution of each topic and hence decide which topics you need to focus on more.

FYI, The Institute of Banking Personnel Selection (IBPS) has released the IBPS PO 2017 notification on 14th August 2017. Online application for IBPS PO VII has been started from 16th August 2017 and the closing date to apply is 5th September 2017. Let’s check latest exam pattern & detailed syllabus-

IBPS PO Exam Pattern 2017

IBPS PO Prelims Exam Pattern

There are no major changes in the prelims exam pattern this year. Based on the notification, the exam is expected to be on similar lines as IBPS PO Prelims 2016 and SBI PO Prelims 2017. The marks secured in Phase I (Prelim Exam) will not be counted for the purpose of Final Selection. This is a qualifying round similar to SBI PO prelims exam.

The prelims exam of IBPS PO will have the following pattern –

IBPS PO Mains Exam Pattern

The mains exam of IBPS PO is divided into 4 sections of Objective Test followed by a descriptive test. The exam pattern of Mains Exam has changed from this year onwards. Highlight of changes this year –

  • Computer awareness section has been removed and Computer Aptitude section has been added to the Reasoning Ability section.
  • Quantitative Aptitude section is now called Data Interpretation & Analysis – Hence DI questions are expected to form a majority of this section.
  • The total questions in the exam have reduced to 155 from 200 last year. This is again on the lines of the SBI Exam.
  • The overall time of the objective exam has increased to 180 mins from 140 mins last year. This is again on the lines of the SBI Exam. With questions reduced and the time increase, the difficulty level of the questions is expected to go up.

New exam pattern of IBPS PO Mains exam has been provided below-

The mains of IBPS PO will have the following exam pattern –

IBPS PO Syllabus 2017 – Prelims & Mains

The questions that will be asked can be from any of the following mentioned exam syllabus. So go through the IBPS PO exam syllabus thoroughly which will give you a proper idea of the expected questions from each of the sections and help you perform well at IBPS PO selection process.

Quantitative Aptitude

As mentioned above, exam pattern of IBPS PO has changed from this year onwards. While Preliminary exam will follow the same pattern, mains phase of IBPS PO is all set to follow SBI PO Mains exam pattern. This means you’ll face more number of Data Interpretation questions in the mains phase now. We will now have a look at the topics that will be asked in the quant section in exam along with their expected weightage.

1. Number Series

Topic Description Expected number of Questions
  • Questions may be based on various patterns like double step variation, arithmetic (difference/ multiplication/ division) based, square/ cube/ square root/ cube root based, mixed arithmetic operations based etc.
  • You can expect 5 questions in the Prelims exam.
  • Less likely to be asked in Mains phase

2. Simplification/ Approximation

Topic Description Expected number of Questions
  • The level of this topic is expected to be moderate.
  • Questions will be based on basic BODMAS rules, percentages etc.
  • 5 questions are expected to be asked from this topic in Prelims exam.
  • Less likely to be asked in Mains phase

3. Quadratic Equations

Topic Description Expected number of Questions
  • Moderate level of questions expected.
  • Questions are expected to be mostly factorization based and less of formula based.
  • 5 questions in the prelims exam may be asked.
  • Will not be asked in Mains exam.

4. Data Interpretation

Topic Description Expected number of Questions
  • Questions will be asked from topics like – Line graph, Bar graph, Pie Chart, Radar Chart, Mixed charts, Tabular charts, Caselet charts and Missing DI.
  • In the Mains phase will be difficult and may be asked in combination with arithmetic problems.
  • Questions in Prelims phase will be comparatively easy but calculative.
  • You can expect 2-3 sets, i.e. 10-15 questions of DI questions in Prelims phase.
  • For the Mains phase, you can expect 4-5 sets of DI questions, which will be difficult as well as calculative.

5. Miscellaneous Problems

Topic Description Expected number of Questions
  • This will involve questions from topics like- Ratio & Proportion, Averages, Age based problems, Percentages, Profit Loss & Discount, Mixture & Alligations, Simple & Compound Interest, Time Work & Wages, Speed Time & Distance, Boats & Streams, Probability etc.
  • Level of questions is expected to be moderate and calculative.
  • You can expect 10 questions from the topics mentioned in the prelims phase.
  • These topics are less likely to be asked in Mains phase individually. They may, however, be asked in combination with DI sets in this exam.

6. Data Sufficiency

  • You can expect 3 statement based Data Sufficiency questions.
  • This topic, however, will be asked in Mains exam.
  • 5 questions can be expected in the Mains exam.

7. Quantity based Questions

  • Quantity based questions were introduced in SBI exam last year.
  • Questions will be calculative and asked in Mains phase of the exam.
  • You can expect 5 questions from this topic in the Mains exam.

Reasoning Ability & Computer Aptitude

Questions in Reasoning ability section will be asked from following topics-

1. Seating Arrangement and Puzzles

Topic Description Expected number of Questions
  • Questions may be asked from Seating arrangements (Linear, Square or circular) or Puzzles (Scheduling, Floor-based etc).
  • You can expect 1-2 variable based questions in the Prelims exam.
  • Questions in Mains exam will be much more complicated with multiple parameters.
  • You can expect 3 sets (15 questions) of these questions in the Prelims phase.
  • This number may go up to 4-5 sets in the Mains exam.

2. Inequality

Topic Description Expected number of Questions
  • Questions from this topic may be direct or coded.
  • The level of these questions will be Easy to Moderate.
  • You can expect 5 questions from this topic in the Preliminary exam.
  • This topic is less likely to be asked in the Mains exam.

3. Syllogism

Topic Description Expected number of Questions
  • The pattern of Syllogism questions has changed in the past year. Questions are now asked usually based on Reverse Syllogism.
  • However, this is more likely to be asked in the Mains exam.
  • You can expect a few questions from direct syllogism in the prelims exam.
  • You can expect 4-5 direct questions in the prelims exam.
  • Questions based on Reverse Syllogism may be asked in the Mains phase.

4. Coding – Decoding

Topic Description Expected number of Questions
  • Like Syllogism, the pattern of Coding – Decoding has also changed.
  • Questions from this topic may be based on simple word coding, sentence coding or the new pattern based coding questions.
  • 3-4 questions from word/ sentence coding may be asked in the Prelims exam.
  • New pattern based coding questions are more likely to be asked in the Mains phase of this exam.

5. Miscellaneous Problems

Topic Description Expected number of Questions
  • This would comprise of questions from topics like – Blood Relations, Direction sense, Order and Ranking, Alphanumeric Series etc.
  • The level of these questions would be Moderate.
  • You can expect 8-10 questions from these topics in the Prelims exam.
  • This number might reduce to 3-4 questions, with a higher level in the Mains phase.

6. Input Output

  • Questions may be based on single or double shifting.
  • You can also expect questions in combination with arithmetic operations in this topic.
  • 5 Questions are expected from this topic in the Mains exam.
  • Questions from this topic will not be asked in the Preliminary exam.

7. Data Sufficiency

  • Questions may be asked based on 2 or 3 statements.
  • The level of these questions would be moderate.
  • You can expect 5-7 questions from this topic in the Mains exam.
  • Data Sufficiency questions will not be asked in the prelims exam.

8. Logical Reasoning

Topic Description Expected number of Questions
  • Logical reasoning based questions may be asked from several topics like- Statement and conclusion/ argument/ course of action, Cause and Effect, theme based etc.
  • You can expect approximately 10 questions from this topic in the Mains exam.
  • Logical reasoning questions will not be asked in the Prelims phase.

9. Computer Aptitude

  • Questions from this section may be conversion or flowchart based.
  • The level of these questions would be moderate.
  • You can expect 5 questions from this topic in the Mains exam.
  • Questions from Computer Aptitude will not be asked in the Prelims phase.

English

You might come across following topics in this section of IBPS PO Exam 2017 –

1. Reading Comprehension

Topic Description Expected number of Questions
  • Comprehensions under this topic will be based mostly on Economy or related field.
  • Questions from Synonyms/ Antonyms under RC may not be asked in the Mains phase.
  • Students are advised to consult Economic Times/ The Hindu/ The Indian Express for this.
  • 1 set of RC with 7-10 questions will be asked in the Prelims exam.
  • For the Mains exam, 2 RC sets are expected to be asked with a total of approximately 10-15 questions.

2. Cloze Test

  • Questions from Cloze test may be asked based on the old or new pattern.
  • The level of these questions would be moderate.
  • You can expect 8-10 questions from this topic in the Prelims exam.
  • This topic is less likely to be asked in the Mains phase.

3. Spotting Errors

  • This topic has seen some major changes over the past year.
  • You can expect new pattern based error spotting questions in the Mains exam.
  • 5-10 questions are expected to be asked in the Prelims exam.
  • You can expect 5 questions based on the new pattern in the Mains exam.

4. Para jumbles

  • Questions from para jumbles may be asked based on the old or new pattern.
  • The level of these questions will be moderate.
  • You can expect 5 questions based on the old pattern in the Prelims exam.
  • New pattern based questions may be asked in the Mains exam.

5. Sentence Improvement

  • Under these questions, errors may be asked in a single or multiple parts of a sentence.
  • Level of these questions is expected to be moderate to difficult.
  • You can expect 5 questions from this topic in the prelims exam.
  • Questions with errors in multiple parts of the sentence may be asked in the Mains phase.

6. Fill in the blanks

  • Questions from this topic may be double or triple filler based.
  • There is another variation of this question where you may be asked to identify one single word that would aptly fill 2 different sentences.
  • Around 5 questions from this topic may be asked in the Prelims or Mains exam.

7. Sentence/ Paragraph Completion

  • Sentence or paragraph completion based questions are usually asked in the Mains phase.
  • The overall level of these questions may be moderate to difficult.
  • You can expect around 5 questions from this topic in the Mains exam.

8. Sentence Connectors

  • This is a fairly new topic, introduced by SBI last year.
  • The level of these questions may be moderate to difficult, depending on how well you understand this topic.
  • 5 questions may be asked from this topic in the Mains exam.
  • This topic is less likely to be asked in the Mains phase.

General Awareness

The exam pattern will comprise of questions from the following topics of the syllabus –

  • Banking & Financial Awareness
  • Current Affairs
  • Static General Awareness

IBPS PO Descriptive Test Syllabus

This section will have 2 questions – It is expected that 1 essay and 1 letter will be asked in this section. Candidates should practice writing essays on current topics preferably on a computer. For letter writing both formal and informal letters should be practised.

Important information about the exam pattern and the exam syllabus –

  • IBPS PO Prelims Exam is of qualifying nature. Marks obtained in mains examination only will be counted for interview call. Final merit list will be made on the basis of total marks obtained in IBPS PO Mains exam & Interview.
  • There will be negative marking of 0.25 marks for each wrong answer in prelims & mains.
  • There will be sectional as well as over-all cut off in prelims & mains both.
    The Selection Process of IBPS PO Exam consists of 3 phases which are given below –

i) Phase I – Online Preliminary Examination (Objective Test) – No major changes from last year.

ii) Phase II – Online Mains Examination (Objective + Descriptive) (Pattern changed)

iii) Phase III – Interview
